The right wing fringe and the
religious right have always been around, but now have taken
over the Republican party.
Continuing the tactics of fear,
they bring
the “death panel” lies into Congress. With whom are Democrats supposed to
negotiate a bipartisan health care
deal?
Second, the vast expansion of
corporate influence through lobbyists and campaign
contributions, makes our government dysfunctional.
Our
corporate-cash-dominated government’s ability to deal with real
problems, like health care, is degraded to such an extent that
one wonders whether the country is still
governable.
Corporations
unleash misleading ads and organize fake grass-roots
protests against any legislation that threatens their bottom
line. For
example, in 1993 the health insurance industry paid 95 cents
on the dollar of premiums to pay claims. That ratio is down to only
80 cents in 2007. Premiums have gone from
1.5 percent of G.D.P. in 1970 to 5.5 percent in 2007, so
that a once minor player has become a political behemoth,
one that is currently spending $1.4 million a day lobbying
Congress.
Given
the combination of G.O.P. extremism and corporate power,
turning this country around is going to take more than one
telegenic leader, but ”years of siege warfare against
financial interests, defending a deeply dysfunctional
political system.” (
Paul Krugman, New York Times, Aug 31
2009)
